Byron, between the coast and the hills.

Private stays, coast, hinterland, aviation, food, wellness and the roads between them, considered as one journey.

First light along the cape at Byron Bay with the coastline running south
The office

A private travel office for Byron and the hinterland.

Byron works best when the coast and the hinterland are treated as one place rather than two separate trips.

Where you stay changes whether the week is beach-led, food-led, family-led, wellness-led or simply quiet. The right journey can move from sunrise at the Cape to lunch inland, a swim at Wategos, dinner in Newrybar, a morning in Brunswick Heads, then back to a house where very little needs to happen.

WAYPOINT coordinates the destination through one relationship — the house, the driver, the chef, the tables, the flight and the roads between them.

Individual stays, operators, aircraft and arrangements are confirmed at the time of enquiry.

01Stay

Stay where the week makes sense.

Byron is highly location-sensitive. A Wategos house is a different trip from a hinterland estate. Brunswick Heads carries a different pace again. Start with how the days should feel, then choose the base.

Byron / Wategos / Belongil

The cape end of the week

Wategos puts sunrise, the beach and the Cape walk within a few minutes of the door, with town close but not underfoot. Belongil is quieter, flatter and easier for larger groups. This is largely a private-house market, with a small number of benchmark hotels at the cape.

  • 01

Private residences, Wategos and the cape

    Wategos / Cape Byron

Private residence / Beach / Walkable

Design-led houses where the day starts on the sand and the car mostly stays where it is.

Houses are sourced to the brief. Nothing is held or guaranteed in advance.

  • 03

Private houses, Belongil and town edge

    Belongil / Byron town edge

Private residence / Space / Families

More room, a quieter beach and a short run into town when it is wanted.

Hinterland

The hills are half the destination.

Bangalow, Newrybar, Federal, Coopers Shoot, Possum Creek, Myocum and the country behind Broken Head. Estates, farmhouses, cabins and design-led residences where architecture sits into the land — timber, stone, concrete and subtropical planting. Cooler nights, a pool, an outdoor table and enough privacy for a chef and a long lunch.

  • 01

    Private estates and farmhouses

    Bangalow / Newrybar / Federal

Private residence / Acreage / Groups

Space, paddock, pool and a table that can hold the afternoon. The tables of Newrybar and Bangalow are a short drive rather than an outing.

Availability confirmed at the time of enquiry.

  • 02

    Design-led houses and cabins

Coopers Shoot / Possum Creek / Myocum

Private residence / Architecture / Quiet

Smaller, more considered houses for couples or one family who want the hills rather than the beach.

Brunswick Heads + north

Where the coast gets smaller

Brunswick Heads is a slower river town: a beach, a breakwall, a handful of good local places and mornings done on foot. Mullumbimby sits usefully between the coast and the hills when the week is hinterland-led.

  • 01

    Private houses, Brunswick Heads

    Brunswick Heads

Private residence / River / Walkable

A base for anyone who wants the coast without the traffic of Byron itself.

  • 02

    Between town and hills

    Mullumbimby

Private residence / Hinterland access / Local

Useful when the week is built around the hinterland but the beach still needs to be twenty minutes away.

South / Broken Head / Lennox

The quieter coastline

Broken Head, Suffolk Park and Lennox Head give beaches with less around them, and houses with more space than the cape allows.

  • 01

    Coastal houses, south of Byron

Broken Head / Suffolk Park / Lennox Head

Private residence / Beach / Quiet

Short drives, emptier sand and an easier run to Ballina on the way out.

Field note

A house in the hills and a house at Wategos can be twenty minutes apart and feel like different holidays.

02Concierge

The details around the stay.

Byron is informal, but it is not effortless. The chef, the driver, the table, the surf and the timing all have to agree with each other. WAYPOINT holds them together, then adjusts as the week actually goes.

03The Way

The road between matters.

Byron is compact on a map and less compact in practice. Town traffic, event weekends, school runs, parking at the cape and hinterland weather can make twenty minutes take an hour. We plan the week so the same road is not driven three times in a day.

Country road running between green hinterland paddocks behind the coast
  1. 01

    The cape

Byron → Wategos → Cape Byron

The best hour of the day and the busiest car park by mid-morning. Walk it early, swim afterwards, and let the rest of the morning stay close.

    • Do the Cape walk early, before the light and the car park turn.
    • Wategos is a short walk from a cape base — leave the car behind.
  2. 02

    Village tables

    Byron → Bangalow → Newrybar

The food-led hinterland run. Short distances, good rooms and no reason to hurry back.

    • A hinterland lunch should own the afternoon, not sit between two other plans.
    • Bangalow's market mornings change parking and pace; we plan around the date.
  3. 03

    Into the hills

    Byron → Federal → hinterland

Rural, creative and green. Ridge roads, farm gates, small halls and cooler air twenty minutes from the beach.

    • Hinterland weather is genuinely different from the coast; roads run wet after rain.
    • Give the drive a full afternoon rather than fitting it around a dinner booking.
  4. 04

    North

    Byron → Brunswick Heads

River, breakwall, beach and a walkable town. Best as a morning or as a base, not as a rushed detour on the way somewhere.

    • Go early and stay on foot.
    • If Brunswick is where you want to be, stay there rather than visiting it.
  5. 05

    South

Byron → Broken Head / Lennox Head

Quieter coastline, fewer people and an easy road. A good open day when the cape is busy.

    • Conditions decide the beach; we choose on the morning rather than the week before.
  6. 06

    Arrival logic

Byron → Ballina / Gold Coast / onward

The airport that suits you depends on your origin, the aircraft, the operator and where you are staying. South-based stays usually favour Ballina; northern and hinterland stays can favour the Gold Coast.

    • Airport choice is confirmed against aircraft and operator requirements for each flight.
    • The last leg is a road transfer either way — we plan the base and the airport together.

Distances are short. The sequence is what makes a Byron week feel loose rather than busy.

Ask about the route
04Air

Arrive close to where you're staying.

WAYPOINT coordinates the route, the operator and the ground movement into the coast or the hills. We do not own or operate aircraft.

01

Arrive privately

Aircraft, airport, slot, handling and the transfer confirmed for each flight.

  • Ballina Byron Gateway, for the most convenient regional access to Byron and the south
  • Gold Coast Airport, for broader airline and private options, then the road south
  • Private aircraft to suitable airports and aerodromes through licensed operators, subject to aircraft, slot, handling and airport requirements
  • Helicopter only where it is suitable, available and genuinely useful
02

From the airport to the house

The last hour decides how the arrival feels.

  • Private vehicle and driver
  • Direct movement to a coastal or hinterland residence
  • Provisioning and chef timed to the arrival, not the booking
03

Continue the journey

Byron sits easily as one sector of a longer Australian journey.

  • Byron → Noosa
  • Byron → Sydney
  • Byron → Whitsundays
  • Byron → Tasmania
  • Byron → Queenstown

05Experience

The days between.

Byron rewards an early start, one good table and an afternoon nobody planned. These are the shapes we build the week around.

Sunrise on the headland track above the sea at Cape Byron
01Two hours, first light

Cape Byron, early

Cape Byron / the lighthouse track

The walk belongs to almost nobody before seven. Up through the rainforest, out along the headland, then down for a swim while the beach is still quiet.

Walk from a cape base, or a short drive and an early park.

Early swimmers and calm water at a small north-facing beach
02Half morning

A Wategos morning

Wategos Beach

Swim, coffee, back to the house. Some of the better Byron days do not go further than this.

On foot from most cape houses.

03Evening

The Byron table

Byron and the town edge

The town cooks well and books out. We hold the rooms worth holding early and keep the rest of the week loose around them.

Reservations confirmed against your dates. Driver either way.

04Three hours, unhurried

Newrybar and Bangalow, long

Newrybar / Bangalow

A food-led hinterland day: one drive, one village, one lunch that takes the afternoon and no plan afterwards.

Twenty to thirty minutes inland. Driver arranged so the lunch can run long.

Green hinterland ridges and paddocks in late afternoon light
05Half day

The Federal road

Federal / Coopers Shoot / the ridges

Rural and creative rather than scenic in the postcard sense. Farm gates, studios, small halls and a temperature drop worth the drive.

Roads are narrow and wet after rain. Timing set on the day.

Boats moored on a coastal river beside a small town
06Morning

Brunswick Heads, on foot

Brunswick Heads

The river, the breakwall, the beach and breakfast. A town that never rebuilt itself for visitors.

Fifteen minutes north. Best early, and best without a schedule.

07Full day

Broken Head and Lennox

Broken Head / Lennox Head

Quieter sand, headlands and a coast road with almost nothing on it. The right call when the cape is busy.

Beach chosen on the morning, by conditions.

Quiet pool terrace and shaded deck at a private residence
08As long as you want

Wellness at the residence

Your house

Massage, yoga or Pilates, a trainer, sauna and cold water where the house has it. Arranged at home rather than booked across town.

Practitioners come to the residence. Times set the day before.

Surfers walking to the water at a point break in early light
09Two hours, early

Surfing

The Pass / Wategos / Lennox, by conditions

Private or small-group coaching for beginners and children, or simply a board and the right beach for the swell that morning.

Coaching arranged through local operators. Beach chosen by conditions on the day.

Empty stretch of beach and headland on a clear day
10Undecided

An open day

Coast or hinterland

One good lunch, one swim, one drive. No itinerary, and nothing that has to be anywhere by a set time.

Driver on call. Decisions made at breakfast.

06Journeys

How we would do it.

These are not packages. They are useful shapes for Byron, built to hold one long lunch, one open afternoon and as little driving as possible.

01

Three nights — Byron proper.

Wategos / Byron / Belongil

  • Day one — Arrive and settle. Dinner close to the house.
  • Day two — The Cape early, the beach, then a long lunch.
  • Day three — One hinterland afternoon, or a Brunswick morning.
  • Day four — Swim, coffee, departure.

One base. No moving.

02

Five nights — coast and hinterland.

Coast or hinterland base

One or two strong food days, one beach day, one hinterland day and one day left open. The base stays put; the days do the moving.

Changing houses mid-week rarely improves a five-night Byron trip.

03

Seven nights — Byron, properly.

One residence, or four nights coast and three inland

A full week in one house usually reads better. Split four nights on the coast and three in the hills only if the move genuinely changes the week.

Brunswick or Lennox as a day, not as a box to tick.

Onward

Byron can sit easily inside a larger Australian journey.

WAYPOINT can hold the next sector through the same brief.

  • Byron → NoosaShort sector north. Residence, river, boat and the days around them.
  • Byron → SydneyHarbour, neighbourhood stay and the city planned around the water.
  • Byron → WhitsundaysPrivate aircraft, island stay and a day on the water.
  • Byron → TasmaniaCool country, road journey, food and landscape.

Same brief. One contact.

Field note

A note on Byron.

Byron is easiest when you stop trying to do all of Byron.

Walk the Cape early. Choose whether the week belongs to the beach or the hills.

Let one long lunch take the afternoon. Use Brunswick when you want the coast to feel smaller.

Do not drive through town three times in one day. Stay somewhere you are happy to come home to before sunset.

The good version should feel loose, not busy.
