Empty white beach on a tropical island with clear shallow reef water and low scrub
The WAYPOINT edit

8 selections

This is a gateway rather than a single region. Eight islands, each asking for a different kind of planning: reef, wildlife, seclusion and culture in turn. Guest numbers are small, aviation usually decides the shape of the trip, and the good weeks go early. Access is confirmed privately for each.

01Lodge

Lizard Island

Stay · AirNorthern Great Barrier Reef, off Cairns

A national park island an hour's charter flight north of Cairns, with a small reef-front lodge, twenty-four beaches and coral gardens you can reach by swimming off the sand. Take a dinghy for the day, snorkel the Clam Gardens and walk up to Cook's Look. Nothing here needs a boat schedule or another island's timetable.

Why it belongs

The rare reef lodge where the reef is at the beach, not an hour offshore.

Closed part of the wet season; best May to October.

02Island

Pelorus Private Island

Stay · Air · SeaPalm Island group, off Townsville

A Great Barrier Reef island taken on an exclusive-use basis, with a beach house, a small team and no one else on the sand. It works best as a complete private journey rather than a stay: aircraft in, vessel alongside, days built around the tide and the reef. Suited to a family or a single travelling party.

Why it belongs

An entire reef island for one group. Planned end to end, including how you get there.

May to October; wet season conditions from December.

03Lodge

Southern Ocean Lodge

StayKangaroo Island, South Australia

Rebuilt above the cliffs at Hanson Bay, low and long against the weather, with the Southern Ocean filling every window. The island around it does the rest: sea lions on the beach, koalas in the gums, and a wild coast that changes hourly. Guided walks and drives are part of the stay rather than extras.

Why it belongs

Architecture and wildlife in one place, with a lodge that is genuinely tied to its coast.

Year-round; spring for wildflowers, autumn for calm weather.

04Island

Haggerstone Island

Stay · AirFar northern Great Barrier Reef

Five hand-built villas on a small island in the far north, reached by charter flight and run by the family who made it. Days are reef days: fishing, diving, uninhabited beaches, and country that almost no one else reaches. It is remote in the real sense, and comfortable without being polished into something else.

Why it belongs

Genuinely remote, genuinely personal, and only possible with the aviation planned around it.

April to November; closed during the wet.

Field note

Islands are an aviation problem first

Almost every island in this edit is reached by a charter flight, a helicopter or a connection that runs once a day. Work backwards from the aircraft and the rest resolves itself. Two nights is rarely enough; three lets the weather be wrong once without costing you the trip.

05Lodge

Orpheus Island Lodge

Stay · AirPalm Island group, off Townsville

A very small guest count on a national park island, with fringing reef straight off the beach and a helicopter arrival from Townsville that takes about half an hour. Days are unstructured: a dinghy, a picnic bay, a research station nearby and dinner set up wherever the light is best that evening.

Why it belongs

Small enough that the island feels private, close enough that getting there is simple.

May to October for the clearest water.

06Lodge

Capella Lodge, Lord Howe Island

StayLord Howe Island, Tasman Sea

Volcanic ridgelines, a lagoon reef at the southern limit of coral growth, and an island that caps visitor numbers at four hundred at a time. The lodge sits beneath Mount Gower with the whole south of the island in front of it. Days are walking, snorkelling and a slow ride to the beach on a bicycle.

Why it belongs

A strict daily rhythm and a hard cap on visitors. Two hours from Sydney and nothing like it.

September to June; flights and beds are limited year-round.

07Island

Bedarra Island

Stay · SeaFamily Islands, off Mission Beach

Eleven villas set into rainforest on a small island off Mission Beach, with private beaches, a dinghy available and very few other guests to notice. It is the quietest kind of tropical stay: no schedule, no scene, a table laid where you ask for it and the sound of the water doing most of the talking.

Why it belongs

Rainforest seclusion rather than reef spectacle. Best for couples and small groups.

April to November; wet season closure applies.

08Culture

The Torres Strait, with local guidance

Air · ExperienceThursday Island and the strait

The islands between Cape York and Papua New Guinea have their own languages, histories and rhythms. A visit is planned with locally owned or culturally authorised hosts, centred on Thursday Island, the Gab Titui Cultural Centre and the stories communities choose to share. Permits and protocols come first, and the pace follows the community's.

Why it belongs

Culture on the community's terms, not packaged as a product. Planned with authorised hosts.

April to November; the wet season limits movement.

Season

Distinctive island places

The tropical islands are at their best in the dry season, roughly May to October, with clear water and steadier winds. Kangaroo Island and Lord Howe follow the southern pattern, with spring and autumn the most comfortable. Some island lodges close seasonally, so dates are confirmed at the time of planning.
