Hamilton Island & the Whitsundays

Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays. Arrive by private aircraft. Stay in a private residence. Take a yacht into the islands. WAYPOINT coordinates the journey through one contact.

Hamilton Island is one of the few places in Australia where a jet runway, a harbour, a golf island and a set of private homes sit within minutes of each other. That makes it a working base for the whole house: WAYPOINT AIR for the arrival and departure, WAYPOINT STAY for the residence, WAYPOINT SEA for yacht and day-boat charter, and WAYPOINT EXPERIENCE for the island days, reef flights, golf and a chef in the house. Onward Whitsundays exploration is planned as part of the same brief rather than booked separately.

The WAYPOINT edit

8 selections

A runway, a harbour and seventy-four islands in front of them. This edit uses Hamilton Island as the anchor and spends the days outward: sailing water, Whitehaven before the crowds, the outer reef by air, a golf island of its own and a night on a reef pontoon. Formats and access are confirmed during planning.

The journey

One brief. One journey.

Six guests from Sydney to Hamilton Island. Private aircraft. Private residence. A yacht for a day. Dinner in the house. Golf or an island day. One contact.

This is how that brief is actually put together. It is an example of how the parts fit, not a fixed package and not a quote. Aircraft type, residence, vessel and experience formats are confirmed with operators, owners and hosts once dates and the party are known.

  1. 01

    Sydney departure

    Private aircraft out of Sydney

    WAYPOINT Air

Aircraft and departure airport are matched to the party, the luggage and the day. Six guests is comfortably within the range of a light or midsize jet, and the sensible departure point depends on the operator, the aircraft and slot availability rather than a rule. WAYPOINT briefs the operator, holds the schedule and keeps you to one point of contact.

  2. 02

    Arrival

Hamilton Island Airport, where operationally appropriate

    WAYPOINT Air

Hamilton Island has its own runway, which is the whole reason the island works this way. Where the aircraft, conditions and operator approvals allow it, you land on the island itself. Where they do not, the arrival is planned through a mainland airport with the onward connection built in and confirmed before you leave.

  3. 03

    Ground

    Transfer, buggies and residence arrival

    WAYPOINT Stay

Cars are not the way you move on Hamilton Island; buggies are. Arrival transfer, buggy numbers, keys, provisioning and the residence handover are arranged so the first hour is not spent organising anything. Someone knows what time you land and what happens next.

  4. 04

    The house

    Private residence check-in

    WAYPOINT Stay

The residence is chosen for the party rather than the postcard: how many need a room, whether the group wants the harbour or the quiet side, and whether the house should be the centre of the week or just somewhere to sleep. Availability is confirmed with owners and managers at the time of planning.

  5. 05

    On the water

A yacht day inside the stay

    WAYPOINT Sea

One day is given to the water. Vessel, crew, departure time from the harbour, route, provisioning and the tender plan are set together so the day works around the tide and the wind rather than a brochure. Formats and inclusions are confirmed directly with operators.

  6. 06

    The table

    A chef in the house

    WAYPOINT Experience

Dinner in the residence is usually the best night of the week. A chef arranged into the house, a table set outside and an evening that runs as long as it wants to. Restaurant tables on the island and at the harbour are held in the same plan where they are wanted.

  7. 07

    The island day

Dent Island golf, or lunch across the water

    WAYPOINT Experience

A championship course with its own island, a short ferry from the harbour. It works as a full round with a clubhouse lunch afterwards, or as lunch alone for the part of the group that has no interest in eighteen holes. Both versions are timed so nobody is waiting on anybody.

  8. 08

    From the air

Heart Reef or Whitehaven, by aircraft

    WAYPOINT Air

Published Hamilton Island Air formats cover the two aerial days worth planning: Journey to the Heart, which lands a small group on a private pontoon beside Heart Reef, and the Whitehaven Beach getaway, which puts you on the sand rather than in a queue of tenders. Both are weather-governed, so they are placed early in the week and moved if the conditions say so.

  9. 09

    Departure

    Home, coordinated back through AIR

    WAYPOINT Air

The return is planned with the same operator relationship as the outbound: departure timing set against the last morning rather than against a check-out desk, buggies returned, luggage handled and the aircraft ready when the group is. One contact from the first brief to the final arrival.

Nothing above is held or priced until you brief us. It is the shape of the journey, so you can see how AIR, STAY, SEA and EXPERIENCE are handled as one plan rather than five bookings.

StayNorthern Hamilton Island

Sixty pavilions along the quiet northern tip of Hamilton Island, each with its own plunge pool and a view straight out across the Coral Sea. It is adults-only, low-built and deliberately separate from the island's busier southern end, while still being ten minutes from the runway and the harbour. That combination is unusual on the reef.

Why it belongs

The region's principal luxury base, and the only one that puts a jet runway and an anchorage within minutes of the door.

May to October for the driest, clearest conditions.

02Water

The islands by private yacht

SeaWhitsunday Passage

The Whitsundays are protected, close together and almost designed for cruising, which makes several days aboard far better than a hurried day charter. Anchor off Hook or Border Island, snorkel from the back, move at the pace of the tide and be in a bay of your own by four. Crewed vessels are matched to the party.

Why it belongs

Seventy-four islands, most of them empty on any given afternoon. A boat is the only way to actually use them.

May to October; trade winds ease in September and October.

03Air

Journey to Heart Island

Air · ExperienceHeart Reef, outer Great Barrier Reef

Heart Reef can only be seen from the air, and the published Journey to the Heart experience puts a small pontoon on the water beside it, limited to six guests at a time. You fly out by helicopter, land on the reef, and have the platform to yourselves for an hour. Weather and tide govern the schedule.

Why it belongs

A genuinely limited experience on the outer reef. Booked well ahead and confirmed to the conditions.

May to October for the most reliable flying and water clarity.

Aerial view of coral formations in shallow turquoise water on the outer reef
Swirling white sand and shallow tidal channels seen from above at low tide
04Water

Whitehaven before the day boats

Sea · Air · ExperienceWhitsunday Island

Seven kilometres of silica sand that squeaks underfoot, and swirling tidal patterns at Hill Inlet that only resolve from the lookout or from the air. Arrive at first light by tender or seaplane, walk the northern end, swim while it is cool and take breakfast on the sand before the first commercial boats round the point.

Why it belongs

The beach everyone photographs, experienced two hours before everyone else gets there.

Year-round; May to October for the clearest water. Stinger suits in summer.

Field note

The reef rewards early starts

Whitehaven at seven in the morning is a different beach to Whitehaven at eleven. The same is true of Hill Inlet, the reef pontoons and the sailing water between the islands. Plan the marquee days early and keep the afternoons for the pool, the harbour and a table with the tide going out.

Dent Island golf and a clubhouse lunch

ExperienceDent Island, opposite Hamilton

A championship course occupying its own island, reached by a short ferry from Hamilton Island harbour. Eighteen holes across ridgelines and coastal scrub, with water visible from almost every tee, and a clubhouse afterwards that has no particular interest in you leaving. Allow the whole day; there is no reason to rush back.

Why it belongs

An island to yourselves for a round of golf. The lunch afterwards is the reason to book the late morning tee.

April to October; mornings in the warmer months.

Hamilton Island Race Week

Sea · ExperienceHamilton Island and the Whitsunday Passage

An annual August regatta that takes over the island: racing during the day in the passage, hospitality on the hill and in the harbour, and a social rhythm that keeps going well past the presentations. You can sail it, follow it from a vessel, or simply take a house on the island and live inside the week.

Why it belongs

An annual fixture. Accommodation and berths go a year out, so planning starts early.

Annually in August; dates confirmed each year.

07Reef

A night on the reef

Stay · Sea · ExperienceHardy Reef, outer Great Barrier Reef

Reefworld sits moored at Hardy Reef, two hours offshore, and a small number of guests stay after the day vessels leave. Reefsleep is on the upper deck under the stars; Reefsuite looks directly into the water. The platform was renewed for the 2026 season, so current formats and capacity are verified during planning.

Why it belongs

Being on the outer reef at night, with no land in sight, is the part of the trip people describe years later.

May to October; subject to sea state.

08Reef

The reef, above and below

Air · Sea · ExperienceOuter Great Barrier Reef

The reef only makes sense when you see both versions of it: the structure from the air, and the life from the water. A seaplane or helicopter out, an hour or two snorkelling or diving on a chosen bommie, then back over the top of it all. The site is picked on the morning, around wind, tide and visibility.

Why it belongs

One combined day, arranged around conditions rather than a fixed departure time.

May to October; visibility best in the dry season.

Stay

Hamilton Island, places worth building the week around

Hamilton Island works best when the house becomes the anchor. Somewhere close enough to the harbour, golf, restaurants and runway, but private enough that the island can disappear when you close the door. These are the Hamilton Island residences we would build the week around, each with a different stay style in mind.

How the house connects

Whichever residence is chosen, WAYPOINT can connect it to the aircraft, the vessel and the island days. The house is the anchor; AIR, SEA and EXPERIENCE are planned around it under one contact.

Sea

The Whitsundays from the water

Almost everything worth seeing here is offshore, so the question is not which boat is biggest but what kind of day you want. WAYPOINT SEA coordinates the vessel, the departure time from the harbour, provisioning, the tender plan and how the day sits inside the rest of the week. Formats, crew and inclusions are confirmed directly with operators at the time of planning.

The full yacht day

M/Y ALANI · an 82ft Sunseeker based at Hamilton Island, run within the ALANI Experience

The flagship private day out of the harbour. Whitehaven, Hill Inlet or a route chosen around the wind, with the pace set by the party rather than a timetable.

It suits a group that wants one long day on the water with room to swim, eat and stop properly, and it pairs naturally with The Cowries and Jasmine House.

Faster day boat, beach-hopping

Axopar 37 · full or half day across the Whitsunday Passage

A quicker, lighter format for beaches, swimming, lunch and island-hopping. It covers ground the larger vessels take their time over.

This is the day for three or four stops rather than one long anchorage, and it works well as a half day when the group also wants an afternoon at the house.

The active water day

Private fishing charter · full or half day, depending on operator and conditions

A private boat, a skipper who works this water, and a day set by tide and weather rather than a brochure. Reef or island fishing depending on the season and sea state.

Nothing is promised about what comes over the side. It is planned for the part of a group that would rather be doing something than watching something.

Vessel days are placed in the week alongside the aviation days, so the two weather-dependent parts of the trip are never competing for the same morning.

Journeys

How we would do it

Two shapes for a Whitsundays week. Both keep the same residence from beginning to end.

  • 5 nights / the Hamilton Island version

Hamilton Island · Whitehaven · Dent Island · reef · home

One residence. No hotel changes. Use the yacht, air and golf days to move outward, then come back to the same house each afternoon.

    See the itinerary
  • 7 nights / the full Whitsundays week

Hamilton Island · Whitehaven · outer reef · Dent Island · private yacht · slow day

Enough time for the marquee days and enough space between them. One day deliberately left loose for weather, water or doing almost nothing.

    Read the featured itinerary
Beyond

The week outside the house

The island itself is easy. The good week comes from how the days are timed around it. One day by yacht. One by air. One almost entirely at the house. Golf across the water. A chef in for dinner. Passage Peak before breakfast. Enough left unscheduled that weather can improve the plan rather than ruin it.

  • M/Y ALANI day charter

    Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays

Private yacht day · an 82ft Sunseeker based at Hamilton Island

The flagship private day from the harbour, run within the ALANI Experience. Whitehaven, Hill Inlet or a route chosen around the wind, with the day shaped by the party rather than a timetable. Formats, crew and inclusions are confirmed directly at the time of planning.

  • Axopar 37 day charter

    Whitsunday Passage

Fast private day boat · full or half day

A quicker, lighter format for beaches, swimming, lunch and island-hopping. It covers ground the bigger boats take their time over, which suits a day where you want three or four stops rather than one long anchorage.

  • Fishing charter

    Whitsundays and the reef edge

Private full or half day, depending on operator and conditions

A private boat, a skipper who works this water and a day set by tide and weather rather than a brochure. Reef or island fishing depending on the season and the sea state. Nothing is promised about what comes over the side.

  • Hamilton Island Air — Journey to the Heart

Heart Reef, outer Great Barrier Reef

Helicopter out, a private reef pontoon limited to six guests

Heart Reef can only be read from the air. The published Journey to the Heart lands you on a small pontoon beside it, with the platform to yourselves for an hour. Weather and tide govern the schedule, so it is planned early in the week and moved if it needs to be.

  • Hamilton Island Air — Whitehaven Beach getaway

    Whitsunday Island

Scenic flight with beach time · published Hamilton Island Air format

Air access to Whitehaven, which changes the beach entirely: you arrive on the sand rather than in a queue of tenders, and the flight over Hill Inlet does the explaining on the way. Formats and timings are confirmed with the operator.

  • Dent Island — golf and lunch, or just lunch

    Dent Island, opposite Hamilton

Eighteen holes and a clubhouse table · short ferry from the harbour

A championship course with its own island, reached by a short ferry from Hamilton Island harbour. It works as a full golf day, and just as well as lunch across the water with no clubs involved. Either way, allow the afternoon.

  • A chef in the house

    Your Hamilton Island residence

Private cooking at the house · a long lunch or dinner

The best night of the week is often the one where nobody leaves. A chef arranged into the residence, a table set outside, and an evening that runs as late as it wants to. Availability is confirmed with local providers as part of planning.

  • Passage Peak at sunrise

    Hamilton Island

Walk · roughly two hours return, timed for first light

The highest point on the island, and the clearest way to understand where you are staying. Start in the dark, take water, and be back for breakfast. Track conditions and heat decide whether it is a good idea on any given morning.

Itineraries

Five nights, and seven

Two worked shapes for the same island, both keeping one residence from beginning to end. They are deliberately underfilled: the weather here decides more than the calendar does, and the good week has room in it.

Five nights

The Hamilton Island version. One house, the marquee days planned early in the week, and afternoons that belong to nobody in particular.

  1. Day one

Sydney by private aircraft, then the house

Aircraft out of Sydney, arrival into Hamilton Island where operationally appropriate, buggies and keys waiting. An easy first evening at the residence rather than a table booked across the island.

  2. Day two

    The water day

Out of the harbour when the group is ready. Whitehaven, Hill Inlet or a route chosen around the wind, swimming through the middle of the day and back in time for the light on the deck.

  3. Day three

    Island morning, Dent Island afternoon

Passage Peak before breakfast for whoever wants it, then the short ferry across to Dent Island for eighteen holes or simply the clubhouse lunch. There is no reason to hurry back.

  4. Day four

    The reef, from the air

Journey to the Heart or the Whitehaven flight, placed on the best-forecast morning of the week. The afternoon is left open on purpose.

  5. Day five

The house, the beach and a chef

A day with nothing timetabled: the pool, the water off the beach, and a chef in the residence for dinner with a table set outside.

  6. Day six

    Departure

Departure coordinated back through AIR, timed against the last morning rather than a check-out desk.

Seven nights

The same logic, given more air. A second day on the water, a slower middle to the week, and space to go further into the Whitsundays if the conditions are right.

  1. Day one

    Arrival and the first evening

Private aircraft from Sydney, transfer to the residence, and an evening that asks nothing of anyone.

  2. Day two

    The full yacht day

The long day out of the harbour. Whitehaven or Hill Inlet, a lunch anchorage, and back when the group decides.

  3. Day three

    Island day

The walk at first light, the pool for the middle of the day, and the harbour in the evening. Nothing scheduled between them.

  4. Day four

    Dent Island

Golf for those who want it, lunch for those who do not, and an afternoon back at the house rather than a second activity stacked on top.

  5. Day five

    Aviation day

The reef from the air: Heart Reef or the Whitehaven flight, moved earlier or later in the week if the forecast says so.

  6. Day six

    The second water day

A faster day boat for beaches and swimming, or a fishing charter with a skipper who works this water. This is the day the week stops being a checklist.

  7. Day seven

    A day left alone

Deliberately unplanned. The beach, the residence, a chef in for dinner, or one more run out to a bay someone liked earlier in the week.

  8. Day eight

    Departure

Home through AIR, with the buggies, luggage and aircraft timing handled by the same contact who set the week up.

Both shapes are editorial rather than fixed. Days move around weather, tide and what the group actually enjoyed, which is easier when one contact holds the whole plan.

One contact

Brief WAYPOINT once.

Brief WAYPOINT once. We coordinate the aircraft, the house, the yacht and the days between.

Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays are the clearest example of how the house works. Four pillars, one island, one plan, and one person who knows what time you land, which residence holds the keys, when the vessel leaves the harbour and who is cooking on Thursday.

One brief across AIR, SEA, STAY and EXPERIENCE. One relationship from the first conversation to the final arrival home.

  • Air

Private aircraft from Sydney or elsewhere, arrival into Hamilton Island where operationally appropriate, and the reef by helicopter.

  • Stay

Private residences on Hamilton Island, chosen for the party and connected to everything else in the week.

  • Sea

Yacht days, faster day boats and fishing charters, timed against the tide and the rest of the plan.

  • Experience

Dent Island golf, Whitehaven, Heart Reef, a chef in the house and the island days between.

Questions

Questions, answered plainly.

Hamilton Island is the worked example of a connected journey. These are the questions that usually come next.

Can you arrange the aircraft, the house and the yacht as one brief?

Yes. That is the point of this page. WAYPOINT AIR for the arrival and departure, WAYPOINT STAY for the residence, WAYPOINT SEA for yacht and day-boat charter, and WAYPOINT EXPERIENCE for the island days. One contact holds the plan.

Do you own the houses or the yachts?

No. Residences are confirmed with owners and managers. Vessels are coordinated with operators. WAYPOINT does not own the houses, the yachts, or the aircraft. We coordinate the journey through one contact.

Can you land privately on Hamilton Island?

Hamilton Island has its own runway, which is why the island works this way. Where the aircraft, conditions and operator approvals allow it, you land on the island. Where they do not, the arrival is planned through a mainland airport with the onward connection built in and confirmed before you leave. We do not publish a runway length here.

When should we go?

May to October is the dry season: steadier trade winds, clear water and the most reliable flying. Hamilton Island Race Week runs annually in August. December to March is wet season: heat, storms and stinger season. Dates and formats are confirmed each year.

What is ALANI Experience?

An operator arrangement based at Hamilton Island, including M/Y ALANI and residences such as The Cowries and Jasmine House. WAYPOINT features it editorially and can coordinate it as part of a brief. It is not a WAYPOINT-owned house or vessel.

Are the 5-night and 7-night itineraries packages?

No. They are editorial shapes so you can see how the week sits together. Days move around weather, tide and the party. Nothing is held or priced until you brief us.

How should we brief a Hamilton Island journey?

Send dates, party size, whether you already hold a house, and what the week is actually for (water, golf, the house, a celebration). If an EA is briefing, include passenger names, baggage, and any hard constraints on arrival or departure. We come back with the shape of the journey, then confirm aircraft, residence, vessel and days with operators and owners.

How does an executive assistant brief this?

One note is enough. Dates, headcount, baggage, preferred arrival window, and whether the week needs a yacht day, Dent Island, or a chef in the house. Use the contact form with destination set to Whitsundays, or write to mason@waypointandco.com.au.

Read more on WAYPOINT Air, or contact the office.

Field note

A note on the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are often sold as a list of things to do. That is not the version we are interested in.

The better week has rhythm. Whitehaven before everyone arrives. Lunch across the water on Dent Island. A yacht day that starts from the harbour when you are ready. A house with enough space to stop moving. A morning where the only plan is Passage Peak before breakfast.

The destination is spectacular. The difference is timing.

That is the WAYPOINT part.

Season

Islands & reef

May to October is the dry season: steadier trade winds, clear water and the most reliable flying. Hamilton Island Race Week runs annually in August. The wet season, December to March, brings heat, storms and stinger season, when swimming is managed with suits and enclosures. Dates and formats are confirmed each year.
